For more information on this award, please refer to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/employment-conditions\/awards\/awards-summary\/ma000025-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the electrical award<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-0\" class=\"icon-anchor\">What is the Electrical Award??<\/h2>\n<p>The Electrical Award, is a set of legal minimum employment standards and conditions that apply to employees working in the electrical industry in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The award sets out the minimum wage rates, working hours, overtime, annual leave, sick leave, and other entitlements for employees working in various roles within the electrical industry, such as electrical, electronic or communications contractors\uff0ctrades assistants and laborers\uff0calarm and security technicians\uff0celectricians\uff0clinespersons and cable jointers.The award is designed to ensure that employees in the electrical industry are treated fairly and receive reasonable pay and conditions for their work.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-1\" class=\"icon-anchor\">Who is covered by the Electrical Award?<\/h2>\n<h3>Coverage<\/h3>\n<p>The Electrical Award covers electrical, electronic or communications contractors who provide electrical services, and their employees who fit the classifications within the award.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors means businesses who provide electrical services by contract.<\/p>\n<p>Electrical services includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">maintaining electrical power distribution lines and associated work<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">installing electrical light and power<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">assembling, installing, wiring, servicing, repairing and maintaining electrical installations and appliances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of employers and employees covered by the Electrical Award include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">electrical, electronic or communications contractors<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">trades assistants and laborers<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">alarm and security technicians<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">electricians<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">apprentice electricians<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">employees who service electronics and appliances<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">linespersons and cable jointers<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic contractors (not part of a building project)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">purchasing clerks\/storepersons<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">arborists (if employed by an electrical business and clearing vegetation near overhead power lines)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">insulation installers (when it isn\u2019t part of a building project)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">employees connecting solar panels to an electrical switchboard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Electrical Award also covers labor hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organization in the electrical services contracting industry.<\/p>\n<p>The following employers and employees are not covered by the Electrical Award:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">clerical and administrative employees<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">employers mainly in the business of manufacturing and supplying plant or equipment for high or low tension power stations or substations that generate or transmit electrical power<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">electrical work on a building site that is done by an employee employed by a business in the onsite building and construction industry<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">plant manufacturing and vending (where it is the primary purpose of the business).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-2\" class=\"icon-anchor\">How are the hours of work arranged in the Electrical Award?<\/h2>\n<h3>Ordinary hours of work<\/h3>\n<p>The ordinary hours of work will be 6.00 am to 6.00 pm, provided that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">the usual starting and finishing time within the spread of hours may not be varied except by agreement of the employer and individual employee or the majority of the employees concerned;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\u00a0and the spread of hours may be altered as to all or a section of the employees by agreement of the employer and individual employee or the majority of the employees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Breaks<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Meal breaks<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\u00a0 An employee, other than a shiftworker, is entitled to an unpaid meal break of at least 30 minutes after every 6 hours worked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\u00a0A shiftworker is entitled to a paid meal break of 20 minutes per shift..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The timing of meal breaks will be at the discretion of the employer. Provided that an employee (other than a shiftworker) must not be compelled to work for more than 6 hours without a break for a meal. Where possible the normal meal break should be as near as practicable to the middle of the period of duty or shift.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rest breaks during overtime<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">An employee must be allowed a paid rest break of 20 minutes after each 4 hours of overtime worked, if the employee is required to continue work after the rest break. Provided that where a day worker on a 5 day week is required to work overtime on a Saturday, the first prescribed rest break, if occurring between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm, must be paid at the ordinary for employees are determined by the National Employment Standards (<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fwc.gov.au\/documents\/awards\/resources\/nes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NES<\/a><\/span>) and the classification of the employee.<\/p>\n<h3>Annual leave<\/h3>\n<p>All annual leave is per the National Employment Standards <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fwc.gov.au\/documents\/awards\/resources\/nes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NES<\/a><\/span>.
