For more information on this award, please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/employment-conditions\/awards\/awards-summary\/ma000077-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the educational services (teachers) award.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-0\" class=\"icon-anchor\">What is the Educational Services (Teachers) Award?<\/h2>\n<p>The Educational Services (Teachers) Award is a set of legal minimum employment standards and conditions that apply to employees working in the school education industry, or children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The award sets out the minimum wage rates, working hours, overtime, annual leave, sick leave, and other entitlements for employees working in various roles within the school education industry, or children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries, such as qualified teachers,unqualified teachers working in a registered school teachers appointed as Directors in the children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries.The award is designed to ensure that employees of the school education industry, or children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries are treated fairly and receive reasonable pay and conditions for their work.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-1\" class=\"icon-anchor\">Who is covered by the Educational Services (Teachers) Award?<\/h2>\n<h3>Coverage<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Teachers Award covers employers in the:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">school education industry, or<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also covers employees of these employers who fit within the classifications of the award.<\/p>\n<p>The school education industry means providing education, including preschool or early childhood education, in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">a school registered or accredited under the relevant authority in each State or Territory, or<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">an early childhood service operated by a school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples of employers and employees covered by the Teachers Award:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">primary schools<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">secondary schools<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">qualified teachers<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">unqualified teachers working in a registered school<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">teachers appointed as Directors in the children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Teachers Award also covers labour hire businesses and their employees who are placed with an organisation in the school education, children\u2019s services and early childhood education industries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The following employees are not covered by the Teachers Award, unless they are a teacher of the school curriculum or part of the teaching staff:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">a person employed to provide religious instruction, supervision of prayer or to undertake other religious duties<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">employees who facilitate early childhood physical education programs<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">a sports coach, assistant or trainer, or<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">a person employed solely to instruct students individually (for example, in music, language, dance or similar) and\/or small group such as student choir, band, string ensemble or similar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Teachers Award does not cover principals, vice principals or deputy principals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Teachers Award also does not cover:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">teachers or integration aides (not university qualified in early childhood teaching)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">classroom assistants<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">director or supervisors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>who work in or in connection with a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">childcare<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">preschools<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">long day care centres<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">child minding centres or<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">out-of-school hours care services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-2\" class=\"icon-anchor\">How are the hours of work arranged in the Educational Services (Teachers) Award?<\/h2>\n<h3>Ordinary hours of work<\/h3>\n<p>A teacher appointed as a Director, employed in an early childhood service which operates for 48 or more weeks per year who are covered by the provisions of Schedule A\u2014Hours of Work and Related Matters\u2014Teachers employed in early childhood services operating for at least 48 weeks per year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Due to the operational requirements of employers in the industry, the ordinary hours of an employee under this award may be averaged over a 12 month period.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The ordinary hours of work for an employee during term weeks are variable. In return, an employee is not generally required to attend for periods of time when the students are not present, subject to the needs of the employer with regard to professional development, student free days and other activities requiring the employee\u2019s attendance.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The maximum number of days that the employee will be required to attend during term weeks and non-term weeks is 205 in each school year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Breaks<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Unpaid meal break<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">An employer is required to provide an unpaid meal break of not less than 30 consecutive minutes to an employee who is engaged or rostered to work for more than 5 hours a day. Such a meal break will start no later than 5 hours after the employee commenced work on that day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Above does not apply to teachers employed in early childhood services operating for at least 48 weeks per year who are covered by the provisions of Schedule A\u2014Hours of Work and Related Matters\u2014Teachers employed in early childhood services operating for at least 48 weeks per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Paid meal break<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If a teacher employed in an early childhood service is required to remain on the premises during the meal break they will be entitled to a paid meal break of between 20 and 30 minutes no later than 5 hours after commencing work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2 id=\"title-idx-3\" class=\"icon-anchor\">How are wages and allowances calculated in the Educational Services (Teachers) Award?<\/h2>\n<h3>Minimum rates<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Full time employee:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Classification<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Criteria<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Minimum weekly rate &#8211;
