The Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.75% increase to the National Minimum Wage and minimum award wages for the 2023-2024 period. These changes, effective from 1 July 2024, have significant implications for employers and employees across various sectors.

Key Changes

National Minimum Wage Increase

  • Weekly minimum wage rises from $882.80 to $915.90 (+$33.10).
  • Hourly minimum wage increases from $23.23 to $24.10 (+$0.87).

Modern Award Minimum Wages

  • All modern award wages increase by 3.75%.
  • Casual loading remains at 25%.

Reasons behind the Decision

The decision to increase wages for the 2023-2024 period was driven by multiple factors, including stagnant labour productivity, reduced profit growth in specific sectors, and forthcoming tax cuts and cost of living relief measures. Additionally, a gender equity research project underscored the potential undervaluation of work within female-dominated industries. The Expert Panel identified four key priority areas for scrutiny and adjustment to tackle gender undervaluation effectively.

Implications for Employers

Ensuring Compliance

  • Review pay arrangements for different categories of employees.
  • Adjust wages in line with the new rates.
  • Considerations for award/agreement-free, modern award covered, all-inclusive salary, and enterprise agreement covered employees.

High-Income Threshold

  • Monitor annual rate of earnings to ensure compliance with the increased high-income threshold.

Implementation Dates

  • Effective Date: Changes come into effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2024.
  • Review Process: Employers are urged to review and adjust wages accordingly to meet the new standards.

These adjustments aim to align wages with living costs while also addressing gender equity issues in specific industries. Employers should act promptly to ensure compliance and fairness in their pay structures.
