How are the hours of work arranged in the Joinery and Building Trades Award?

Employees typically work 38 hours weekly under this Award. Day workers work 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, across a 20-day 4-week cycle. Overtime and public holiday rates are determined by the award. If an employee works on a public holiday, they are entitled to a minimum of 4 hours’ pay at 250% of their ordinary hourly rate.

  • Apprentice minimum rates

Apprentices who start their training contract after January 1, 2014, will receive a minimum pay rate. This rate is calculated as a percentage of the minimum weekly rate for level 5 classification. The calculation is made using specified tables and rounded to the nearest $0.10, with amounts less than $0.05 disregarded.apprentice minimum rates.

Leave Manage in the Joinery and Building Trades Award

Annual Leave Loading: Employees are entitled to a 17.5% loading during annual leave, calculated based on minimum wages, loadings, and allowances specified in the agreement.

Commencement of Annual Leave for Distant Jobs: Annual leave starts on the first full working day after an employee returns from a distant job.

Excessive Leave Accruals: Employees with more than 8 weeks of accrued annual leave may confer with the employer to address the excess.

Directions to Take Annual Leave: Employers may direct employees to take paid annual leave if agreement cannot be reached, ensuring certain conditions are met.

Requests by Employees for Leave: Employees with excessive leave accruals can request paid annual leave, subject to specific conditions.

Annual Leave in Advance: Employers and employees can agree in writing for the employee to take annual leave before accruing entitlement.

Direction to Take Annual Leave During Shutdown: Employers may direct employees to take annual leave during shutdown periods, with specific notice requirements and conditions.

Proportionate Leave on Termination: Employees must be paid for accrued but unused annual leave upon termination.

Cashing Out of Annual Leave: Paid annual leave can be cashed out under specific agreements, with conditions to ensure fairness and compliance with the law.
